International Women’s Day 2021 — Celebrating the Female Sports Talent in India and in the Cricket Metaverse!

First of all, a very Happy International Women’s Day!
India shares a cherishable bond with sports. The country has been home to many passions and crazy sports culture. But in a country where every sports event is celebrated like festivals, have we given enough chances to women? According to a BBC Survey, only 29% of Indian women are interested in playing some kind of sports. The number is low owing to the wider sexism and gender biases in the country.
But, many great sportswomen have broken these chains of society and marked their excellence on the global platform. The likes of PT Usha, Sania Mirza, Mary Kom, Saina Nehwal, and more have proven the society completely wrong and have established their name in the fields of their respective sports.
Rise of Women’s Cricket in India
Whenever an Indian hears the word ‘cricket’, the very first image that flashes in front of him is of Sachin Tendulkar. Such was his dominance in the bat-and-ball game! But now when we talk about women’s cricket, who do you think of? If Mithali Raj is your answer, then well you too like us have been an admiring fan of the Indian Women’s Cricket Team. While the captain herself along with Jhulan Goswami laid the foundation & are highest run-scorer and wicket-taker in the game. Shefali Verma has already broken Sachin Tendulkar’s 30-year-old record & got her name into the book of legends. Smriti Mandhana, Harmanpreet Kaur, Jemimah Rodriguez, and other youngsters are making sure that Indians indeed will watch cricket matches of the women’s team with the same enthusiasm and obsession they watch the men’s team matches.
Making into the T20 World Cup Finals 2020
“If they end up winning the title, they will probably do what Kapil Dev’s World Cup-winning team did for Indian cricket in 1983. And they will become superstars.”
These were the coach’s words when the team left for Australia to compete at the biggest ICC event. The Women in Blue started the competition by defeating the hosts- a side who has lifted the title five times. And who would have thought India would face the same team in the finals after being undefeated in the tournament!
The platform was set. A day to remember for all Indians. Everyone was eyeing the triumph! But, it wasn’t a day for the Indian side. They fought through and ended up losing the final. But the amount of determination and spirit shown by the team was highly commendable. The fame and support for the deserving women cricket team have been continuously growing since then.
